It Sucks to Have Allergies



There is an increase in the number of people in North America with food allergies. I developed allergies to all fresh fruit a little over a decade ago. When I tell people that I am allergic to all fresh fruit (and I literally mean ALL fresh fruit, even the weird, imported fruit from China Town), the first reaction I get is "What? Seriously? That's impossible! You must have it wrong. You should research that a bit more." I use to think that I was a strange creature. I feared that I would eventually develop Severe Combined Immunodeficiency. I felt like an outcast, and no one could explain what was wrong with me. They didn't know what specific protein it was that was causing the allergic reaction. The allergy specialist that I had gone to see said that I was maybe experiencing an allergic reaction to pesticides used on all fresh fruits and vegetables (this was at a time when organic foods were really expensive, and not readily available). But how does one explain how I was only allergic to fresh fruit, not fresh, raw vegetables?

This summer I bit into an apple for the first time in a decade. Since the allergy specialist said that I was "maybe" allergic to pesticides, I thought, well why don't I try organic fruit? I walked into the local Metro with a huge grin, I was about to bite into an apple (one of my favourite fruits). Long story short, I was disappointed. My third bite in, my throat was already starting to get itchy. I'm not anaphylactic, my throat becomes itchy and begins to swell a little bit, but it's the first fresh apple that I've eaten in a decade, so I'm desperate and so I continue to eat my apple. I feel uncomfortable for a few hours after eating my apple, but it was well worth it.

The frustrating thing with food allergies is that there is so little research being done on this topic. Even with the increase of food allergies, there is little literature out there about the possible causes and cures. Fresh fruit allergies seem unusual, however it is becoming more common. In the past 4 years I have met 5 people with fresh fruit allergies. The alarming thing is that most people that I have met who have fresh fruit allergies have grown into them. Usually if a child has food allergies when they are younger, there is a probability that they will grow out of them. Those who develop allergies later in life tend to stay allergic to those foods for the remainder of their life.

While I have noticed that food companies and public institutions have addressed the recent rise in allergies, especially peanut allergies, there needs to be more awareness about other food allergies that could become dietary concerns for the North American population. I am waiting for the day when I can tell someone that I am allergic to all fresh fruit, and have them not give me a snarky comment about how I need to do more research because "It's impossible to be allergic to all fresh fruit", because really, I've been living with these allergies for a little over a decade. I think I should know what I am, and am not allergic to.

You told me once before when we were volunteering together about this allergy...and even I gave you a somewhat snarky reply...I have heard of people being allergic to some fruits, I even know a woman allergic to fructose, severely restricting her fruit options....but FRESH fruit...thats a new one! Do you know of other people with this allergy?

    Should this allergy increase in the population, I'd be concerned. We know that many people consume too few F&Vs but what if we wiped out a whole category of options for them....what impact could this have on an diet already devoid of many micronutrients and fibre? I wonder...

  2. I couldn't begin to imagine the feeling of frustration. You mentioned that this was a reaction to fresh fruit. Are your reactions just as strong with freeze-dried, frozen or dehydrated fruit? What, if any, theories have been elucidated through research?

  3. It must be so frustrating for you when people don't believe you! It's almost as if some people have the mentality that "if I don't know about it, it must not be real". There definitely needs to be more awareness and education on all of the different types of allergies. Hopefully in the future more information will be available to the public so that you won't need to deal with snarky comments any more.

  4. When I first started reading I was actually shocked because I didn't know that such allergy exists. But now to think about it, anything is possible I mean how is that different than having allergies to peanuts?!.. yes you have far less choices when it comes to fruits but you still manage to deal with it and that is what’s important. I do agree that more awareness should be raised regarding this type of allergy, this way people will be more considerate and understanding.

  5. I actually know 5 people who are allergic to fresh fruits. Two of whom are are allergic to all fresh fruit. I personally have a huge problem with my fibre intake. I'm also allergic to nuts, and a lot of the high fibre products out there contain nuts are high in sugar, so I have a difficult time consuming an adequate amount of fibre. But I do drink a lot of Tropicana!

    I am allergic to all fresh fruit, so if it has been processed I can eat it. I love baking because of how easy it is to incorporate fruits into baked goods. I can have a minimal amount of frozen fruits. If I have too much I begin to get itchy. One
    theory is that processing kills the protein that I'm allergic to, so by cooking, or drying the fruit it kills whatever protein it is that I am allergic to. During the freezing process, some proteins are preserved, so that's probably why I still get a reaction.

  6. Do you know what the protein is or might be that is causing this? I would like to read a little bit more about this when I have the time to. It is quite interesting!

    Also, I've been working in a restaurant for a while now, and I have came across individuals who tell they have a fruit allergy. They didn't mentions it the fact that they were fresh made a difference, but I remember thinking that they were just trying to make my life difficult. haha
